Privacy
Surfslang.com is a free surf slang glossary run from Cape Town, South Africa. We collect as little as we can. This page explains what we do collect, why, and what you can do about it.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics to count visits and see which words people look up. It uses cookies and collects things like the pages you view, roughly where you are (country or city), your device and browser, and how you found the site. We don’t use it to identify you. Visitors in the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland aren’t tracked with cookies unless they agree; until then, Google measures visits without them. You can also opt out with Google’s Analytics opt-out browser add-on.
Advertising
Some pages may show a banner ad. Sponsors we work with directly are shown as plain images and links; they don’t set cookies through us. Ads from Google AdSense may use cookies to show ads and measure them, and, where you allow it, to personalise them. You can manage this in Google’s ad settings and read how Google uses data from sites like this one.
Votes
When you upvote or downvote a word, we store your vote against a scrambled code made from your connection and browser details, so you get one vote per word. The code can’t be turned back into your IP address, and we don’t store your name, email or any account.
Forms
When you submit a word, suggest an update or contact us, what you type (including your name and email, if you give them) is sent to our team’s Slack workspace. We use it only to review your suggestion or reply to you, and delete it when it’s no longer needed.
What we don’t do
We don’t sell your information, and we don’t share it except with the services named above.
Your rights
Under South Africa’s POPIA and, where it applies, the GDPR, you can ask what we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete it, or object to how we use it. Send a privacy request and we’ll respond within 30 days. You can also complain to the Information Regulator of South Africa or your local data protection authority.
Changes
If this changes, we’ll update this page and the date at the top.
